Response Paper of The AlchemistThe Alchemist narrates a story of a Santiago who has a reoccurring dream that he can find his treasure near the Pyramids. Santiago, a shepherd, is guided by the king of Salem. Then he sells all his sheep in order to follow his dream. On his trip, he suffers many hardships as he loses all his money three times; he crosses the sea of death Sahara and even his life is in danger many times. Each danger he faced was worse than the one before. But under the guidance of the alchemist he overcomes all the obstacles in his heart. Therefore he always lands on his feet, and finally gets to the Pyramids. At the end he knows where his treasure is. From The Alchemist we can see that the way is rough for Santiago to pursue his dream. He gives up the way his father arranged to be a priest in order to travel. He gives up being a shepherd which he knows everything a shepherd should know. He also gives up being a crystal merchant’s assistant which is promising. Afterwards he leaves Fatima who he loves. All he has done is only for one purpose – his dream. When we stand before our dreams, perhaps we will try to grab it. But how many of us can stick to the end? It turns out to be not enough that we just possess dreams and ideals. When we face our dreams, should we be as fearless, resolute, and perseverant as Santiago? Or should we be like the crystal merchant who regarded his dream as a reason to go on living? Or even should we be the robber, who met with the boy next to the Pyramids who doesn’t believe his dreams at all. The answer is without any doubt. Our life is finite. If we waste time sighing about life’s unfairness, our dreams will eventually become our imaginations. Santiago gives us an example of his achievements by his personal legend no matter how hard and dangerous the trip was, it cannot sway his determination. Do we really follow our heart when we are on the way to pursue our dreams? In the book of The Alchemist, the boy asked the alchemist, “Why do we have to listen to our heart?” “Because, wherever your heart is, that’s where you’ll find your treasure,” the alchemist answered. “You will never again be able to keep it quiet. Even if you pretend not to have heard what it tells you, it will always be there inside you, repeating to you what you’re thinking about life and about the world.” That’s why we have to be clear what our hearts tell us. “You will never be able to escape from your heart. So it’s better to listen to what it has to say. That way, you’ll never have to fear an unanticipated blow.” Living in this diversified and changeful society, sometimes we ignore the voice from deep in our heart. Most of the time, we hear it. However we don’t have the courage to believe it and accept it.Those words from Melchizedek, the king of Salem, are echoing in my mind while I am reading the book. “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.“ “At a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what’s happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate. That’s the world’s greatest lie.” Indeed, any dream can be realized in this world, but it depends on whether the person possesses a heart of tenacity. When we focus on conquering the difficulties, our fate is controlled by ourselves. Through this book the author is trying to tell us a truth. It’s that our lives will be brilliant and meaningful only when we to be a person who follows one’s heart, who believes in oneself, and who is dauntless to move forward to approach one’s goal.
