To peopleof moderate means, compelled to live fairly near their work in acity, the suburb offers the most civilised way of life. Nearly allEnglishmen are at heart countrymen. The suburban villa enables thesalesman or the clerk, out of hours, to be a country gentleman. Aman in the newish suburb feels that he has onefoot in the city and one in teh country.As this is the compromisehe likes, he is happy.
