The beauty of Britain is as hard to defineas it is easy to enjoy. One of its charms is that it is immenselyvaried within a small range. With varity goes happy surprise. Youhave never to travel long without being pleasantly astonished. Ifyou go down into the West Country, among rounded hills and softpastures, you suddenly arrive at the bleak tablelands. Another characteristic of British landscape isits exquisite moderation. It has been born of a compromisebetween wildness and tameness, between Nature andMan. Men and trees and flowers, have all settled down comfotablytogether. the motto is, "Live and let live." In addition, there is agreat deal to be said for the suburb. To peopleof moderate means, compelled to live fairly near their work in acity, the suburb offers the most civilised way of life. Nearly allEnglishmen are at heart countrymen. The suburban villa enables thesalesman or the clerk, out of hours, to be a country gentleman. Aman in the newish suburb feels that he has onefoot in the city and one in teh country. As this is the compromisehe likes, he is happy.
