ramp sth up：to make sth increase in amount 使…的数量增加

e.g. China is ramping up efforts to speed up mask production. 中国正在加紧生产口罩。

ramp作名词就表示“斜坡、坡道”

e.g. Public policy makes retirement a cliff edge, when it should be a ramp.目前的公共政策使得退休呈现为一种断崖似节点，而它本该是一个缓坡。

peak作动词用，意为“达到高峰、达到最高值”

e.g. Unemployment peaked at 17%. 失业率达到17%的最高点。

e.g. Many health, policy and economic experts worldwide are currently trying to map the curve of the outbreak and find out when the virus will peak. 目前，世界各地的卫生、政策和经济专家都正试图绘制疫情曲线，想预测疫情何时会见顶。

surge：to suddenly increase in value 急剧上升；飞涨；激增

e.g. 过去70年来，中国人均寿命从35岁提高到77岁，文盲率从80%降至6.7%，人均可支配收入增长约60倍。In the past seven decades, the Chinese people’s life expectancy has risen from 35 to 77 years, their illiteracy rate dropped from 80 to 6.7 percent, and their per capita disposable income surged almost 60 times.

extend：延长；使延期

e.g. extend a deadline延长最后期限

The show has been extended for another six weeks. 展览会又延长了六周。

e.g. Careful maintenance can extend the life of your car. 精心保养可延长汽车寿命。

dwindle：to become gradually less or smaller （逐渐）减少，变小，缩小；强调变得越来越少终至全无

e.g. 如果中美贸易争端延宕或升级，将扭曲全球产业链和供应链，给跨国投资和贸易带来风险，殃及世界经济增长。if this bilateral dispute lingers on or escalates the global industrial and supply chains may tumble, cross-border investment and trade may suffer and world economic growth may dwindle.（将“殃及世界经济增长”具体翻译为世界经济增长放缓）

e.g. As the Second World War recedes in time, and the number of Holocaust survivors dwindles, it falls to us to be ever vigilant.第二次世界大战已经远去，大屠杀幸存者日益减少，因此我们有责任时刻保持高度警惕。

halve ：to reduce by a half; to make sth reduce by a half （使）减半

e.g. The company is halving its prices. 该公司正将产品半价出售。

plummet：to fall suddenly and quickly from a high level or position 暴跌；速降

e.g. As of January 30, the number of passenger trips plummeted by 84.1 percent to 15.13 million compared with the equivalent day last year. 截至今年1月30日，全国旅客出境游人次降至1513万人次，同比下降84.1%。

天上掉馅饼怎么说

godsend：something good that happens unexpectedly and helps sb/sth when they need help 天赐之物；意外的好运；及时雨

e.g. 70年的成就，不是从天上掉下来的，更不是别人恩赐的，而是中国人民用勤劳和汗水、智慧和勇气、改革和创新奋斗出来的！The advances in China in the past 70 years are not a godsend, nor a gift from others. Rather, they are made by the Chinese people through vision, hard work, courage, reform and innovation.

e.g. This new benefit has come as a godsend for low-income families. 新到的救济金是低收入家庭的及时雨。

e.g. The Web has been a godsend to me as a writer.对于像我这样的作者来说，网络简直是天赐之物啊。

与godsend相似的一个词是windfall

windfall：an amount of money that sb/sth wins or receives unexpectedly 意外获得的东西；意外之财、横财；

windfall字面意思是风吹落的果子，尤指苹果。欧洲中世纪时，英国许多土地都掌握在贵族手中，包括大片的森林。这些私人森林专供贵族打猎之用。国王颁布了严厉的法令保护贵族的森林和野兽，平民不能拿走森林的一草一木。只有当风雨来临时，他们才能捡吹落到地上的果子和折断的树枝。因此，本义为“苹果等风吹落的果子”的 windfall 就演变成了“意外得到的好处”。

e.g. 这些成绩不是天上掉下来的，也不是别人的恩赐施舍，而是全体中国人民披荆斩棘、锐意进取，一步一个脚印干出来的。These achievements are neither windfalls nor hand-outs. They are the result of the persistent efforts of the Chinese people.

e.g. a windfall tax 暴利税
