There was once a king who was so cruel and unjust that his subjects yearned for his death or dethronement. However, one day he surprised them all by announcing that he had decided to turn over a new leaf.
曾经有一位国王,他是那样的残暴和不公,以至于他的臣民们都盼他死或退位。然而,令所有人感到惊讶的是,有一天他声称决定改过自新。
dethronement n.废位,废立;
“No more cruelty, no more injustice,” he promised, and he was as good as his word. He became known as the ‘Gentle Monarch’. Months after his transformation one of his ministers plucked up enough courage to ask him what had brought about his change of heart.
他承诺道:“不再残暴,拒绝不公。”并且他也言行一致。他被称为“温柔君主”。转变的几个月后,他的一位大臣鼓起勇气,问他是什么原因使他改变了心意。

And the king answered, “As I was galloping through my forests I caught sight of a fox being chased by a hound. The fox escaped into his hole but not before the hound had bitten into its leg and lamed it for life. Later I rode into a village and saw the same hound there. It was barking at a man. Even as I watched, the man picked up a huge stone and flung it at the dog, breaking its leg.
国王回答说:“当我在森林中疾驰时,发现一只狐狸正被猎犬追赶。狐狸虽然逃到了洞里,但被猎犬咬了一只腿而终身残疾。后来我骑马进入一个村庄,在那里看到了同一只猎犬。它在冲着一个人咆哮。就在我看着的时候,那个人捡起一块大石头,扔在狗身上,打断了它的腿。

The man had not gone far when he was kicked by a horse. His knee was shattered and he fell to the ground, disabled for life. The horse began to run but it fell into a hole and broke its leg. Reflecting on all that had happened, I thought: ‘Evil begets evil. If I continue in my evil ways, I will surely be overhauled by evil’. So I decided to change”.
结果那人又被一匹马踢了没走多远。他的膝盖被打碎,跌倒在地,终生残疾。而这匹马开始狂奔,但却掉进一个洞里,摔断了腿。我反思这一切,我想:“邪生邪,恶生恶。如果我继续邪恶的做法,我一定变得恶魔不如。”所以我决定改变”。
The minister went away convinced that the time was ripe to overthrow the king and seize the throne. Immersed in thought, he did not see the steps in front of him and fell, breaking his neck.
大臣走了出去,他坚信推翻国王并夺取王位的时机已经成熟了。他沉浸在这邪念中,没有看到面前的台阶,跌倒并摔断了脖子。
Moral: Cycle of Deeds always gives us back what we give to others. If we do good to others, our goodwill happen, If we do bad to others, our turn will also come.
道理:因果循环总是把我们给别人的东西还给我们。如果我们对他人好,好事就会发生在我们身上;如果我们以恶相向,背运也会来临。
