APICS CPIM Learning System, Part 1

Part 1 of the APICS CPIM Learning System contains one module, which presents the basics of supply chain management. Part 1 of the learning system does not follow the same structure as the Exam Content Manual (ECM); however, all of the terms and concepts in the ECM are presented in the Part 1 materials. If you are interested in a detailed mapping of the ECM to the learning system, or the learning system to the ECM, mapping documents are available for download from the online Resource Center.

Module 1: Basics of Supply Chain Management (BSCM)

Section A of this module starts by introducing the supply chain management environment, and it shows how manufacturing fits within this highly interconnected system and helps it thrive. Since organizations choose many different ways to compete and succeed, the discussion starts at the top with strategy and shows how operations strategies directly flow from and support corporate strategy.

Section C provides an overview of continuous improvement philosophies. Improvements can make the organization more effective at achieving or redirecting its strategy. They can also reduce costs and thus improve profits and organizational viability. However, organizations that maintain even a profitable and effective status quo are actually moving backward, because the competition will be improving their own efficiencies and effectiveness Improvement therefore cannot be a one-time event but must be continuous. The continuous improvement philosophies discussed in this section, such as lean, total quality management, and six sigma, are not easy programs to implementor sustain. Getting a positive return on investment from them requires every person in the organization to be involved and committed. The overviews here will help give manufacturing professionals an idea of the end goals of these programs as well as how to ensure their success.

Section D provides an overview of lean manufacturing and its emphasis on reduction of waste, including unneeded inventory. It also addresses how this methodology. which evolved from just-in-time manufacturing, can be used for continuous improvement.

Section E addresses demand management, which is how manufacturers determine how much demand there is for their products and services as a whole and then develop a forecast for any demand that cannot be satisfied within the available lead time.

Sections F through H of this module explore how to perform the core functions of conventional manufacturing planning and control, which start with master planning and proceed to material requirements planning, with checks on capacity at each point at which the process becomes more detailed. After reading these sections, you will be able to manually calculate the master production schedule. For most practitioners, this is performed by a computer system, but the only way to find errors or determine if the results make sense is to know how the system itself works. The sections also explore the practical options schedulers have to adjust schedules and compare and contrast how lean manufacturing performs each of the core functions.
